Best Lego Super Heroes set ever!
By Justin G.
So this is pretty much the best Lego Super Heroes set ever. The Hulk Buster Smash set ties into the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron movie and features one of the most anticipated battles the Hulk versus a giant Hulkbuster Iron Man. This set includes four great minifigures a new Iron Man, a new Hulk, Scarlet Witch and Ultron Prime, the movies main villain. Oh, and a giant Iron Man suit thats just too cool.
Complexity There are only 248 pieces in this set, so its not terribly complex. There are a few Hero Factory-style elements to go with the standard Lego bricks, and some color/brick combinations we havent seen before. Figure about 30-45 minutes to assemble this one.
Playability My son hasnt let me put this set on the shelf yet, if that tells you anything. Its just a super-fun set. You can put Iron Man in the Hulkbuster armor and battle either the Hulk or Ultron. The armor fires missiles and has fingers that can hold Ultron. It is a little fragile, so really young kids might snap off parts and get frustrated. Other than that though, the minifigures alone make this a great set to play with.
This is the best set out of the Age of Ultron tie-ins, and arguably the best Lego Super Heroes set altogether (though the Superman vs. Power Armor Lex Luthor is a close second). It looks great, has great minifigures, and is just a fun set all-around. Given the piece count, the thirty dollar price tag is a bit steep, but once you build it youll see that it was worth every penny.

I was most excited about this set from the new LEGO Avengers: Age of Ultron line. Iron Man has always been one of my favorites, so it's exciting to see a LEGO Hulkbuster. I was pleasantly surprised that Tony himself fits inside the Hulkbuster.
The Hulkbuster has a lot of large pieces. From the Juggernaut-like helmet, to the large joints, the build is fairly solid. This has the side-effect of bringing the piece count down, and having a lot of specialized pieces. It's as poseable, and much more intimidating, compared to the Sentinel figure found in the LEGO Superheroes 76022 X-Men vs. The Sentinel Building Set.
I did find a few questionable areas. The Hulkbuster helmet is attached via two weak "Battle Droid" arms. I supposed if they break, you can easily replace the blue ones with arms. I'm not a fan of the knee joins either. The joints are turned 90 degrees from what you'd expect, but it's easy to switch it to a more human-like joint. Finally, you cannot position the Hulkbuster's palm repulsors forward, unless the Hulkbuster is getting ready to initiate a bear-hug (Hulk hug?).
Since the movie has not released, I do not know the significance of the trap the Hulk is in. Without context, that portion felt very unnecessary. It does have a clear attachment that allows Scarlet Witch to fly. Wait, she can fly? I also don't know the significance of the Ultron Prime figure included for this scene. But I'm not complaining about an extra minifigure.
Pros:
- Cheapest set to get a LEGO Hulk.
- Scarlet Witch!
- Hulkbuster!
- Random(?) Ultron Prime.
- Is much better designed than the LEGO Sentinel.
- Rivals LEGO Superheroes Green Lantern vs. Sinestro in value for MSRP.
Cons:
- Some questionable design decisions on the Hulkbuster.
- A lot larger than the Hulk. Which is only bad if the Hulkbuster was battling the Hulk, instead of the LEGO Sentinel.
- Movie Scarlet Witch. Yes, I know the set is based off the movie version, but I still wish for the more iconic version of Wanda.
Great for kids. So-so for adult fans.

**edit** After owning this for a few days I think a bit more fondly of it. It's not movie accurate in any way, but still fun. I'd say it is worth MSRP.
I did not purchase this at Amazon. I purchased it at a local LEGO store for MSRP. I would strongly advise against purchasing from 3rd party sellers on Amazon until they are selling this at a reasonable price instead of the $20 markup that you pay as of 05/10/15.
Anyway, this is a highly anticipated and desired LEGO set from Avengers: Age of Ultron. It comes with a Hulk Mini-fig, which is larger than a standard minifig, A Scarlet Witch minifig, an Ultron minifig, an Iron Man minifig, parts for the Hulk containment unit and of course parts for the Hulkbuster.
IMO, the Hulkbuster containment unit was added to this set to bump up part count: it can't fully envelop The Hulk like it does in the film. The Scarlet Witch's translucent "power" parts are blue instead of the red as shown in the film. Don't know why Lego did this unless the set was planned before the effects were finalized in the movie. The Iron Man fig is similar to all other LEGO Iron Man figs.
On to the Hulkbuster itself. It looks pretty decent, and is an easy build. My major complaint is that even if you raise the leg mounting bar like I did, the Hulkbuster is still twice as tall as The Hulk, whereas in the film, the Hulkbuster is only about a head taller than The Hulk. Kids who just want to play out the scene from the movie will love this. Adult Fans of LEGO or Marvel will look on this with a more critical eye. I originally wrote an unfavorable review of this set, but in the weeks since I've purchased it, I've had so much fun playing around with the Hulkbuster and the minifigs that the minuses are far outweighed by the sheer fun of this set.
For kids - 5 stars. I would have gone crazy for this when I was small.
For adults 3 stars - There are essentially pointless elements like the containment unit and there is a lack of movie accuracy with the Scarlet Witch's power part and the Hulkbuster being significantly taller than The Hulk, but it's still fun; lots of fun.
Please don't pay insane markups for this set.
